Chain Reaction Crash in Prince George's County Kills Boy, Critically Injures Woman

By: Allan M. Siegel

A chain reaction crash in Prince George’s County on Interstate 95 killed a 13-year old boy and critically injured a Baltimore woman. According to Maryland state police, the crash occurred December 13th near the Intercounty Connector and involved four vehicles.

Maryland Tractor Trailer Accident LawyerInvestigators report that the crash was initiated when a disabled vehicle came to a stop in traffic on I-95 around 9 p.m. As the Dodge Caravan carrying the boy and the woman slowed when approaching the disabled vehicle, it was struck in the back by a tractor-trailer and pushed into the stalled car. Another vehicle also collided with the tractor-trailer following the initial collision.

Authorities shut down both directions of the interstate Tuesday evening as they transported victims to nearby hospitals. Unfortunately, the boy succumbed to his injuries and the woman was admitted in critical condition. Two occupants in the disabled vehicle were also injured and transported to a local hospital.

Although investigators have pieced together some of what took place, they will continue to look closely at the incident in order to determine if negligence or safety violations were involved. For example, a driver who is distracted or fatigued might not be able to slow or stop in time when approaching a section of slowed traffic. This was the case in a high profile crash involving comedian Tracy Morgan in 2014, who was injured in a collision involving a truck driver who had been awake for over 24 hours. In that crash, traffic and the vehicle carrying Morgan were slowed due to road work.
