Woman Awarded $51 Million in 18-Wheeler Accident

By: Allan M. Siegel

In 2012, Wayne Marable’s tractor-trailer shifted into forward gear and, despite allegedly having its emergency brake on, dragged his wife under its wheels, causing catastrophic physical injuries and a severe brain injury. On April 12, a New Orleans jury awarded Wayne’s wife Connie a $51.5 million judgment against Daimler Trucks North America, which manufactured the 18-wheeler truck.

Connie Marables was injured in a parking lot when Wayne’s 2007 Freightliner truck rolled back without warning. Wayne had asked Connie to help him stop the truck. While attempting to do so, she was pinned under the tractor-trailer, severely injured, and now requires 24-hour medical care.

The jury found that Daimler’s design was dangerous and assigned 90% of the blame to the trucking company. Connie’s husband Wayne received 10% of the blame for instructing his wife to help him stop the rolling truck.
