Kentlands Man Killed in Bicycle Accident with WSSC Truck

By: Allan M. Siegel

A Kentlands man was tragically struck and killed yesterday morning in an accident involving a Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) truck. According to police reports, the accident occurred Monday morning shortly after 9:30 a.m. as the 60-year-old man was cycling east on Darnestown Road near The Shops at Potomac Valley. The utility truck, making a left at an intersection, struck the man in front of the shopping center. Emergency medical personnel attempted CPR and life-saving efforts, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased was identified as Andrew Gerard Malizio, 60, of the 300 block of Hart Road in Gaithersburg. Our prayers and sympathies go out to the family. Officials from WSCC announced that the commission will also be conducting its own investigation.

The fatal collision is a tragedy for all involved, and a continued reminder of the need for everyone in the community to do our best to watch for cyclists and safely share the road. Bicycle riders are among the most vulnerable on public streets and they have little protection from outside forces. Although the man in this case had been wearing a helmet, he still suffered fatal injuries.
