On January 28, 2017, 2 teenagers were hit by a car in Randallstown, Maryland.
The 14-year-old on the bike was killed. The other teenager on the bike
was seriously injured. Police have since identified and arrested someone
who they believe hit the teenagers while driving drunk. The community
has been hit hard by very the loss of such a young life.
Unfortunately, these things happen far more often than they should. Such
horrific situations are easily preventable – don’t drink and
drive and pay attention while behind the wheel. Whenever you enter a vehicle,
remember that it is your legal obligation to drive safely and to act in
a reasonable manner so as to reduce the risks of causing preventable harm,
such as what happened recently in Randallstown.
As we know all too well having served the DC Metro area for over 40 years,
motorists often fail to uphold their legal duty of being safe and diligent
when driving. Fortunately, there are laws and pathways provided by the
civil justice system that enable the injured and the wronged to pursue
justice and compensation for their losses.
While the driver in this crash will be criminally investigated and possibly
charged for a crime as a result of his actions, the criminal case will
not provide the compensation the victims and their families need. In order
to recover damages for things such as medical expenses, funeral costs,
and the tremendous emotional injuries these families have endured, they
will need to navigate the civil justice system and file personal injury
or wrongful death claims.
At Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata & Siegel, P.C., we have helped many
victims who were harmed by negligent drivers, including many victims injured by
