Water testing at three schools in Northeast and Southeast D.C. have revealed
elevated lead levels in the school water. High lead levels in drinking
water can cause long-term lead poisoning (particularly in children), which
causes brain damage resulting in developmental problems such as impulsive
behavior, poor language skills, and trouble learning new information.
As a result of the findings, city officials have announced plans to conduct
lead poisoning tests for students at the affected schools.
Premises owners are required by law to take reasonable measures to ensure
the safety of their property and the people who use and enjoy their property.
Unfortunately, property owners do not always attend to potential hazards
