Radon is an invisible, odorless, and radioactive gas that is emitted by
the decay of uranium within the ground. (Uranium is used in nuclear power
plants and weapons.) Exposure to radon can cause cancer, most notably
lung cancer.
Alarmingly, recently 26 public schools in Montgomery County have tested
positive for radon levels that exceed the limit recommended by the Environmental
Protection Agency. As a result, Montgomery County school officials recently
announced a plan to re-test all 202 schools (Montgomery County has the
largest school system in all of Maryland). Many of these schools have
not been tested for radon in several years.
Lead, asbestos, radon – all of these are examples of dangerous contaminants
that are invisible to the naked eye, but which can infest buildings. If
you have reason to believe that you have been harmed by such a contaminant,
you should contact the personal injury attorneys at Chaikin, Sherman,
