Each year on Maryland roads and highways, more than 500 people are killed in auto accidents. Unfortunately, many of these accidents are preventable. In an effort to reduce high rates of traffic fatalities and to ensure the safety of all Maryland residents, safety officials and advocates throughout the state have joined the national Toward Zero Deaths campaign.

Toward Zero Deaths' goal is simple to understand; decrease the number of traffic fatalities by educating the public about some of the most common preventable causes of collisions.

The safety campaign focuses on the following causes of accidents:

    • Speeding – According to state crash statistics, speeding is a factor in approximately one-third of all fatal traffic crashes in Maryland.
    • Impaired Driving – Impaired driving is a top cause of accidents nationwide. This includes impairment by both alcohol and drugs.
    • Distracted Driving – Distracted driving injures more than 30,000 Maryland residents each year. Cell phone use and texting while driving are considered the most dangerous forms of distracted driving.
    • Seat Belts – Failing to wear a seat belt is a traffic violation for a reason. It is one of the single most important things you can do to protect yourself in the event of a car accident.

According to campaign statistics, 62% of fatal auto accidents involve speeding, impairment, or lack of seat belt use. Nearly one-third of fatal auto accidents involve distracted driving. What's most important to understand is that each of these causes are preventable and entirely within the control of drivers. Because these driving behaviors pose such great dangers, they are also illegal.

By continuing to educate the public about these serious risks, Toward Zero Deaths can become a crucial tool for making public roadways safer places for Maryland residents. As the campaign's slogan makes clear, even one death is unacceptable.
