The Month of May has been declared Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in
the United States, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) has been working with local agencies across the country to educate
motorists and riders about safely sharing the road.
As Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month comes to an end, our legal team would
like to remind all local residents throughout the DC metro area about
the importance of motorcycle safety on our roads and highways.
Increasing Awareness Saves Lives
Increasing awareness about the risks motorcyclists face can help save lives.
Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles on the road and can be easily
overlooked. In addition, riders have very little protection against outside
forces. Both of these factors make for increased risks of motorcyclists
experiencing accidents, injuries, or death. According to the NHTSA, motorcycle
more than 30 times more likely to die in traffic accidents than occupants in passenger vehicles.
Below are few important things motorists should remember:
- Never drive distracted. Doing so can place others at risk, including vulnerable
motorcyclists. It can wait.
- Remember that motorcyclists have the same rights, privileges, and responsibilities
as any other motorist.
- Give motorcyclists a full lane width. Motorcyclists need room to maneuver
safely, and you should never try to share the same lane.
- Remember motorcyclists are small. Always be on alert for riders and be
sure to check mirrors and blind sports – and to make a signal –
when turning or switching lanes.
- Give motorcyclists extra distance. Allow more follow distance when traveling
behind a motorcycle. They may need to maneuver suddenly to avoid hazards
like potholes, pavement seams, and other dangers.
Riders can also play an important role in staying safe and sharing the
road by being properly licensed and trained, obeying all traffic laws,
and always wearing helmets and protective clothing.
