A collision involving three vehicles injured 5 victims and a Maryland State Police trooper early Saturday morning in Montgomery County, Maryland. The crash occurred shortly before 7:00 am when an SUV traveling along the highway south of Gaithersburg veered into the shoulder and into the back of a the trooper’s cruiser, which then collided with the vehicle in front.

At the time of the crash, the trooper had been conducting a traffic stop in the left shoulder of the northbound I-170 south of Shady Grove Road. The trooper was inside the cruiser when it was rear-ended by the SUV and became stuck inside. After emergency crews removed the trooper, he was airlifted to the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for serious injuries. The driver of the SUV also suffered serious injuries, and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Due to the force of the crash, the police cruiser also collided with the vehicle which it had stopped. Four passengers inside the vehicle, including two children, suffered injuries and were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Officials have stated that while the crash remains under investigation, they suspect the driver of the SUV was under the influence of alcohol and that charges are currently pending.

As we have seen in many auto accident cases, driver impairment is a common factor – and it is one that is entirely preventable. In these instances, victims injured by drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs – even prescription medication – have the right to hold the at-fault drivers accountable for their negligence and the harm they caused.

Chaikin, Sherman, Cammarata & Siegel, P.C. has handled many cases on behalf of victims injured by drunk and drugged drivers, and should that prove to be the case in this crash, we know the victims have every right to pursue a full and fair recovery of their damages.
