A crash involving a Metrobus, pick-up truck, and a tree in Silver Spring, Maryland Monday evening injured over a dozen people, local authorities report. The collision took place shortly after 4:00 pm Monday when the J2 bus collided with another vehicle and then crashed into a nearby tree on East-West Highway near Grubb Road. Metro representatives reported the bus was en route to the Montgomery Westfield mall at the time of the collision.

A spokesman from Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services commented on the severity of the crash, stating that the sound of the collision could be heard for blocks. At the time of the crash, there were 15 passengers on the bus, ten of whom were transported to the hospital for medical attention.

The bus driver, who was trapped inside of the crushed bus for 15 minutes until being freed by rescue workers, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. His status was later upgraded to stable.

According to reports from officials, the bus driver has been charged with reckless driving. Under Maryland law, motorists can be charged for reckless driving when they operate a vehicle without regard to others’ safety. Aggressive driving, driver negligence, impaired driving, and other similar actions are examples of behaviors that can result in criminal reckless driving charges.

Although few details about the crash have been released, the charges do imply there was sufficient evidence the bus operator was driving negligently and that this crash could have been prevented. Should this be the case, or should others have played a role in causing the accident, victims injured in the collision have the right to pursue compensation for their damages.
